| A Perry Street Primer on Property Rights…. |
Myself: an affordable single family home in Northwest Denver. My pleasing neighbor to the south for nearly 100 years. My new neighbor to the south: contemporary triplex, not so affordable. (I have a new paint job; my old owner fled the construction. Flipper still has me on the market.) My new well-shaded and not so private anymore backyard. (QuickWins 2 was designed to prevent this….guess it can be gamed if you know how.) The house on the left is now worth less; less if sold and certainly less as a place to live. No consideration or compensation is ever required to mitigate this taking of value. Real estate and developer interests never consider neighboring property values. This city administration talks a lot about property rights, but they only protect development rights. Who will take the lead? Who will be Denver’s profile in courage? The mayor? A “property rights” talking member of Council? A member of the Planning Board? Historic Denver? The Denver office of the National Trust who decries the destruction of urban neighborhoods? The INC leadership? Who?!? Preserve Neighborhood Character, PO Box 12587, Denver, CO, 80212 www.rightzoningnorthwestdenver.com |
